Householders in North Wales — including Gwynedd, Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham — may qualify for energy improvement support through Welsh Government and UK Government schemes. Here is what is currently available.

Nest — Welsh Government free home energy improvements

Nest is the Welsh Government's flagship free home energy scheme. It is available across Wales including North Wales to households on low incomes and those living in fuel poverty. Funded measures can include:

  • Wall insulation (cavity, solid, external or internal)
  • Loft insulation
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Heating system upgrades
  • Renewable energy measures

Eligibility is assessed against income criteria and property condition. Applications are made through Nest directly, not through energy suppliers.

ECO4 in Wales

ECO4 — the UK-wide Energy Company Obligation scheme — is also available in Wales. It is administered by energy suppliers and reaches households through benefits-based eligibility or local authority referrals. North Wales local authorities participate in the LA Flex route.

ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026. If you have not yet checked eligibility, now is a good time to do so.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme in Wales

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is available in Wales as well as England. Owner-occupiers and landlords replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system with an air source or ground source heat pump can apply for a £7,500 voucher through an MCS-certified installer.

Warm Homes Plan in Wales

The Welsh Government has its own Warm Homes Programme which includes elements beyond what is available in England. Eligibility criteria and funded measures differ from the England-only Warm Homes: Local Grant.
