BUS voucher for air source heat pumps

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides a £7,500 grant voucher for eligible air-to-water heat pump installations in England and Wales. The voucher is claimed by your MCS-certified installer and deducted from the installation cost — you do not need to pay upfront and claim back.

Air-to-water vs air-to-air

The BUS covers air-to-water heat pumps (which heat both space and water). Air-to-air systems (which only provide warm air and no hot water) are not eligible for the BUS voucher. Most domestic installations are air-to-water.

Who can apply?

  • Owner-occupiers or landlords of properties in England or Wales
  • The property must have an existing heating system being replaced
  • New-build properties are not eligible
  • An MCS-certified installer must carry out the installation
  • The property typically needs a valid EPC rating

Is my home suitable for an air source heat pump?

Air source heat pumps work well in a range of property types, but are most efficient in well-insulated homes. An installer will carry out a heat loss calculation before confirming suitability. Key considerations:

  • Adequate outdoor space for the unit (typically against an external wall)
  • Reasonable insulation in loft and walls
  • Radiators that may need upgrading for lower flow temperatures, or underfloor heating
  • A hot water cylinder if you do not already have one

Other routes if income or benefits criteria apply

If your household receives certain benefits or is on a lower income, ECO4 or Warm Homes: Local Grant may cover heat pump installations at reduced or no cost. These routes are separate from BUS and have different criteria.
