The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides £7,500 for eligible air-to-water heat pumps in England and Wales, or £9,000 under the temporary off-gas-grid uplift. The grant is claimed by your MCS-certified installer and deducted from the quote.
Air-to-water vs air-to-air
Air-to-water systems, which heat water for radiators and hot water, receive £7,500 or the eligible £9,000 uplift. Residential air-to-air systems, which provide warm air rather than hot water, can now receive £2,500.
Who can apply?
- Owner-occupiers or landlords of properties in England or Wales
- The new system must replace existing fossil-fuel or electric heating
- It cannot replace an existing low-carbon heating system
- Most new-build properties are excluded, except eligible self-builds
- An MCS-certified installer must carry out the installation
Is my home suitable for an air source heat pump?
Air source heat pumps work well in a range of property types, but are most efficient in well-insulated homes. An installer will carry out a heat loss calculation before confirming suitability. Key considerations:
- Adequate outdoor space for the unit (typically against an external wall)
- Reasonable insulation in loft and walls
- Radiators that may need upgrading for lower flow temperatures, or underfloor heating
- A hot water cylinder if you do not already have one
